Marc Faber: Doctor Doom

On February 28, 1946, Marc Faber was born in Zurich, Switzerland where he raced for the Swiss National Ski Team. His school was in Geneva but when he grew up, he studies Economics at the University of Zurich.  When he was 24 years old, he obtained the PHD degree in Economics.

In 1973, he moved to Hong Kong where a branch of White Weld & Company he joined in 1970 exists. From 1978 until the firm’s collapse in 1990, he worked as a management director at Drexel Burnham Lambert Ltd Hong Kong.

His fame started when he established his own company “Marc Faber Limited” which resides in Thailand, while the other office resides in Hong Kong, the city he adores!

His advices and fund management are based on his education in the university, the experiences he gained during the firm’s collapse and the technical touch with defining exact levels for targets and stop loss he added recently to the researches his company publish.

Faber publisher of the ‘Gloom, Boom and Doom Report’ frequently enjoys displaying his command of numbers, dates and predictions. He has been called “Doctor Doom” for many years and has been known as a contrarian in investor. The most impressive that, he was the subject of a book entitled Doctor Doom, written by Nury Vittachi in 1998.

His series of successful predictions:

  • In 1980s, he advised his clients to get out of the market before October 1987 crash.
  • In 2000s, he anticipated the upside direction for oil, metals, emerging markets and especially chine in his book “Tomorrow’s Gold”.
  • In 2010s, he has anticipated the market conditions fundamentally and technically as well including the QE.

Recent predictions:

  • In June 2013, S&P could drop 30% from recent highs
  • In July 2013, Indian market to bottom out soon.
